Fit for future? Sport, sustainable development and education for sustainable development
Abstract
Sport has been assigned an important role in achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (United Nations, 2015). At the same time, it is also seen as a driver of environmental, economic and social issues. Sport offers many links to sustainable development issues, such as the carbon footprint of sport-related mobility and major sporting events, conflicts of use in outdoor sports, the environmental and social conditions of sports equipment consumption, or social inequalities in sport. In addition, educational opportunities in the sense of sustainable development can be created in and through sport (Gieß-Stüber & Thiel, 2016).
The presentation will provide an overview of the intersections between sport and sustainable development, with a particular focus on the opportunities that sport offers for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Empirical research on ESD and sport will be presented and discussed.
