Outdoor sports and climate change – Facing health threats, current situation and implementing preventive measures to ensure the health of athletes
Abstract
Climate change is considered to be one of the greatest health risks for outdoor athletes. Despite the perceived high risk, there is paucity of knowledge about climate change-related health risks, and very little research has been conducted in this area. The aim of our Delphi study was to systematically analyze the health effects on athletes. A panel of medical and sports experts identified six main risks, including temperature-related risks, accident and injury risks, UV-related risks, respiratory risks, infection and intoxication risks, and psychosocial and mental risks. To adapt to climate change and reduce these climate change-related risks for athletes, the experts proposed eight areas for prevention measures for sports organizations, clubs, coaches, and athletes. These measures can be organized in a pyramid model and can serve as a basis for future prevention concepts in practice.
